THAILAND
Thailand
Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is a country in Southeast Asia, located at the centre of the Indochinese Peninsula with a population of over 66 million people. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy, having a deep-rooted culture of revering the King and being part of a monarchy. It is a parliamentary democracy and is notably a heavily Buddhist country with 94% of the population being Buddhist.
Thailand is struggling to fight the COVID-19 virus, and is seeing daily figures of thousands, or even tens of thousands, with total deaths already exceeding 4,000. Hospital beds have run out and efforts to control the virus surge have been hindered by insufficient vaccine supplies. The country is taking measures to extend COVID-19 restrictions which include travel curbs and partial lockdowns, which significantly affect the well-being of the people.
How RiverLife has been working with this Community
As part of our Missions from Home (MFH) initiative, we are working with Baan Dem Rak (House Full of Love) Community Centre in Chiangmai, run by a Singaporean couple, Sheryl & Jason, to help and support the local community there.
This community that we are working with is at risk, because the majority of the population are migrants and their children. Statelessness prevents some from accessing social rights. Additional, adolescent girls are at high risk of being involved in illegal sex work, and vices such as brothels and drug houses are hidden in the community. Many of the families in the community are dysfunctional and children have little protection against these vices on the street.
Additionally, the COVID-19 situation in Thailand has greatly affected the livelihood of the families in Chiang Mai, as some of them face difficulties to pay for their rent and even bring food the table everyday, significantly implicating their standard of living.
Families are affected economically and in need of help, suffering in their daily living especially due to measures such as partial lockdown. Young ones losing their opportunities to receive good education.
How are we working with the community in MFH 2022?
Befriending Project
Come alongside the people in the community, to support them, pray for them, and be with them in spirit, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. Through virtual home visits on Zoom, they will get to build relationships with the families, hear their stories, learn about their needs, and encourage them to fulfil their potential.
Giving a listening ear and practical help are ways we can communicate God’s love to these families, to remind them that they’re not alone. Visit families on Zoom once a month.
