THAILAND

Thailand

Thailand, formerly known as Siam, is a country in Southeast Asia, located at the centre of the Indochinese Peninsula with a population of over 66 million people. Thailand is a constitutional monarchy, having a deep-rooted culture of revering the King and being part of a monarchy. It is a parliamentary democracy and is notably a heavily Buddhist country with 94% of the population being Buddhist.

Thailand is struggling to fight the COVID-19 virus, and is seeing daily figures of thousands, or even tens of thousands, with total deaths already exceeding 4,000. Hospital beds have run out and efforts to control the virus surge have been hindered by insufficient vaccine supplies. The country is taking measures to extend COVID-19 restrictions which include travel curbs and partial lockdowns, which significantly affect the well-being of the people.

The Community

How RiverLife has been working with this Community

As part of our Missions from Home (MFH) initiative, we are working with Baan Dem Rak (House Full of Love) Community Centre in Chiangmai, run by a Singaporean couple, Sheryl & Jason, to help and support the local community there.

This community that we are working with is at risk, because the majority of the population are migrants and their children. Statelessness prevents some from accessing social rights. Additional, adolescent girls are at high risk of being involved in illegal sex work, and vices such as brothels and drug houses are hidden in the community. Many of the families in the community are dysfunctional and children have little protection against these vices on the street.

Additionally, the COVID-19 situation in Thailand has greatly affected the livelihood of the families in Chiang Mai, as some of them face difficulties to pay for their rent and even bring food the table everyday, significantly implicating their standard of living.

Families are affected economically and in need of help, suffering in their daily living especially due to measures such as partial lockdown. Young ones losing their opportunities to receive good education.

How can you Pray?

Pray For:

  • The health and protection of the communities in Thailand, to have a strong spirit in them despite this difficult time due to the COVID-19 situation, to have peace and hope in their hearts as well

  • God to Enable the Team to be able to reach out to the community despite how the COVID-19 situation has made it difficult to do missions conventionally by travelling to the country itself even through Zoom calls and virtual house visits

  • God to Enable the Team to be able to have an outpouring of God’s love to journey alongside the local staff, to equip them and encourage them, that they may bear fruit and always have the Joy of the Lord!

  • Sheryl & Jason, to continue to serve faithfully in the heart of the community, for protection and strength, and have the wisdom and creativity to lead this effort while working alongside the Team to do God’s work

  • The community in Thailand to be receptive to the love of God and His ministry, and for the Holy spirit to be upon the locals who choose to serve the community as well

Where will your Donations be Channeled to?

Befriending Project

This is where we come alongside the people in the community, to support them, pray for them, and be with them in spirit, especially during the COVID-19 crisis. Various team members will virtually befriend different families from this community, and regularly follow-up with them through various digital means.

Through virtual home visits on Zoom, they will get to build relationships with the families, hear their stories, learn about their needs, and encourage them to fulfil their potential. Giving a listening ear and practical help are ways we can communicate God’s love to these families, to remind them that they’re not alone.

We are also collecting donations to prepare a gift pack to bless each of these families. The donations collected will also be used to support any additional needs that surface during these meet-ups.

Donations for a Digital Skills Training Centre (DSTC)

We will be helping Ban Dem Rak (House Full of Love) Community Centre collect donations for a Digital Skills Training Centre. The objective of this Centre is aimed at helping locals acquire much-needed digital skills to improve their employment opportunities, during a time when jobs are harder to find as competition is even higher.

In the midst of the pandemic, the current situation for the locals in Chiang Mai calls for even greater attention since the people living in the area where Baan Dem Rak is located largely come from low-income families, and struggle to meet basic needs of daily living such as having food for the family. Education is also hindered by the Covid-19 situation since schools often have to close and on-site learning is banned. Thus there is greater value in the running of this centre to potentially help improve the lives of the people in the long run.

Equipping and Encouraging the Local Staff

The Thai ministry staff and core volunteers of Ban Dem Rak (House Full of Love) Community Centre need encouragement and support as they continue to serve the Lord in the community centre. It is certainly not easy for them to be a believer in a country where less than 1% of the population are Christians, let alone as full-time ministry workers.

One of the ways we can help to encourage and equip these local staff is through English classes on zoom. Through these English classes, we can help them develop confidence and competency to engage in English conversations. Additionally, having English classes with them on Zoom is a great platform to build relationships with them and encourage them in the Lord.

In addition to the English lessons, we will also be collecting donations to provide a safe and secure place for these staff to live in, the Treehouse, as they serve in a high-risk neighbourhood.

Virtual Garage Sale

One of the traditional ways of collecting donations is through a garage sale, where we sell donated items that are either Brand new, or still in good condition. However, in light of the current Covid-19 situation in Singapore, instead of selling them in our church atrium, we are moving the marketplace online, to digital spaces like Carousell.

Should you wish to contribute donated items to our garage sale, do let us know via the following form: rlc.sg/mfh-thai-garage-donate
