PHILIPPINES
Sarangani, Philippines
Sarangani got its name due to its proximity to Sarangani Bay. It has a total population of 558,946 people in the 2020 census. Majority of the population are Christians, with 48% as Roman Catholics and 31% as Protestants. Other religious minorities include Islam (9%), Iglesia ni Cristo (2% – an independent nontrinitarian church) and others (10%).
The main source of income comes from agricultural sources like coconut, corn, rice, rubber and sugarcane plantations. Philippine Statistics Authority shows that almost 50% of the population in Sarangani lives below the poverty line between the years 2009-2015 with a slight improvement to 41% in 2018.
The Community
How RiverLife has been working with this Community
We has been reaching out to the B’laan people by planting churches and working with the pastors there to alleviate food shortage issues in recent times. They reside in the mountain ranges of Southern Mindanao, Philippines, making travelling to nearest towns challenging due to long and undulating terrains.
Previously, Bethel Glory Community Fellowship (BGCFC) was established by RiverLife Church (RLC), and within 5 years, this partnership led to 12 churches being planted in the province of Sarangani. Additionally, medical missions organised by RLC helped the community in Sarangani to receive free health checkups and medicines.
How can you pray?
Pray for:
Provision of food. Previously RLC Missions sent rice relief to some mountain churches in June 2021 and it was well received by the villages.
Ongoing project: Livestock Livelihood Project (which aims to provide horses, cows and goats for the pastors of BGCFC, so as to be able to use these animals to travel up and down the mountains as well as to buy agricultural and household supplies by selling the produce of the animals)
Rats infestation destroying rice crops (updated on 30/06/21)
Where will your Donations be Channeled to?
As travelling is a challenge, there is a significant lack in secondary education among the youths as the nearest secondary school is far away. MFH Sarangani aims to empower the youths in the B’laan villages by providing a strong foundation in education, as well as in spiritual growth and livelihood skill sets.
This Holistic Education Project involves the construction of a dormitory to house 16 youths at the initial stage with plans to scale it up to 30 youths in the future. This would enable the youths to have better access to free education, while providing proper housing and financial support. Additionally, these youths will be equipped with knowledge of the Christian faith as well as life skills so as to raise them up as leaders and disciple makers in their own churches.
