MYANMAR

Myanmar

Myanmar is a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. It has a population of 57 million. Of this, 88% of them are Buddhists, 6% are Christians, 4% are Muslims and 2% Others. Throughout its decades of independence, Myanmar has undergone military rule, civil war, isolation from global affairs and widespread poverty.

Currently, the people in Myanmar are doubly hit by the global COVID-19 pandemic as well as the overhanging political climate, with many families needing urgent and critical help. It is currently facing a new spike of COVID-19 cases, with reported virus-related deaths surging. This has led to added pressure on the fragile health care system, with partial lockdowns and stay-at-home measures imposed.  The political backdrop has resulted in unrest and also disrupted the way of life for many families. More than 225,000 people have fled from their homes in a bid to protect their families and livelihoods have been impacted.

The Community

Needs faced by the Community

Food - The overall situation has made obtaining basic needs hard. Many are unable to find permanent jobs and are also afraid to leave their homes to work. Families find it difficult to get by, and may go days without any food or even eating street rats.

Infrastructure – Village amenities such as houses, schools and roads have been damaged and key rebuilding needs to take place to provide displaced people with homes and allow basic functions to resume

Hygiene - Myanmar struggles to provide basic water, sanitation and hygiene services, especially to areas affected by poverty. This places many lives at risk, especially during a pandemic.

How RiverLife has been working with this Community

Since 2013, RiverLife has partnered churches in Myanmar by equipping pastors and leaders with ministry skills and knowledge, planting churches in remote villages and building tuition centres to educate children from poor families who could not afford school fees. Other projects include evangelism outreach, training tuition teachers, food distribution, building village roads, installing street lamps and conducting children camps.

How can you pray?

Pray for:

  • Comfort, healing and strengthening of immunity for people during this COVID pandemic

  • A stop to the current political crisis and that God will bring peace, unity and harmony to this nation. Also for God to raise good leaders to steer the country to peace and progress.

  • The economy to pick up so poor can find jobs

  • Humanitarian aid for displaced communities and refugees who fled into jungles and caves to have access to shelters, sufficient food, clean water and health care.

  • Through all this, for a spiritual awakening of the people to God
